Piezoelectric nanogenerator (PENG)

PENGs are able to convert mechanical energies to electricity. PENGs are based on internal polarization called “Piezoelectric effect” by external mechanical load. PENG can utilize any vibrations including wind, wave, human motion and even acoustic waves. The output performance is related with material properties (piezoelectric constant), level of input energy, and types of deformation. To enhance the output electricity, we perform the design optimization in nano/microscale, developments of novel material and system design.

Triboelectric nanogenerator

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) are one of mechanical energy harvesters based on “contact electrification and electrostatic induction”. The pros of TENG are high output performance, no limitation in material, cheap and so on. To improve output energy, we focus on surface/interface engineering, kinematic module/resonance design, material development, and optimized electric circuit design.

Photovoltaic cell

Photovoltaic or solar cell is popular renewable energy harvester that can convert light to electricity in direct current (DC) form. The basic principle of organic solar cells is based on “electron excitation and hole-electron pair generation” by external light. To advance applicability of photovoltaic cells, we study fully flexible, light-weight, and high efficient photovoltaic cells based on organic photovoltaic cells (OPV) and perovskite solar cells.

Hybrid energy harvester

Our group studies piezoelectric, triboelectric or photovoltaic generators, and their combined hybrid energy harvesters for compensation of disadvantages from single energy harvester and sustainable energy generation. Furthermore, we design and develop the hybrid energy harvesting systems for utilizing various input energies.
